Double Diamond - The Key to Help Leaders Drive Creativity

When it comes to creativity, many people think it's something "innate," but in reality, creativity can be nurtured with the right method. That's why the Double Diamond model is widely used to help teams think innovatively systematically, rather than just waiting for "lightbulb moments." This model consists of four main phases, each helping teams expand and narrow their thinking effectively:

Phase 1 - Discover:

  • Before finding solutions, let the team review the entire problem
  • Collect information from multiple sources: actual data, customer feedback, internal opinions
  • Advice for leaders: Create an open space for teams to ask questions and discuss existing issues. Don't rush to force solutions right from the start.

Phase 2 - Define:

  • Synthesize information and identify the core problems to solve
  • Not all problems are important – focus on key points that can create the biggest change
  • Advice for leaders: Guide the team to focus on the main issue by asking: "If we could only solve one thing, what would it be?"

Phase 3 - Develop:

  • This is the time to encourage experimenting with new ideas, unrestricted by old patterns
  • Organize brainstorming sessions, invite diverse perspectives
  • Advice for leaders: Don't immediately dismiss "seemingly crazy" ideas – many breakthrough solutions originate from out-of-the-box thinking

Phase 4 - Deliver:

  • Test feasible ideas and refine based on actual feedback
  • Evaluate effectiveness before expanding to wider application
  • Advice for leaders: Allow small-scale testing before making large investments – this helps reduce risks and increase chances of success

Quick tip from The New Leaders: If managers feel meetings lack effectiveness, they can apply the Double Diamond by dedicating 1-2 early year meetings just to discovering and defining problems before asking teams for solutions. This helps avoid hasty decisions that don't truly solve root problems.
